artist statement
I can’t just paint something or someone without knowing what I want to say, and why I want to say it. Research is a large part of my work. Whether it is learning more about a portrait subject to reflect their character and their interests, or learning what exactly the rock formations are like in a Newfoundland outport community, honouring each subject in an accurate, authentic and interesting way is crucial to me.
I work in a realist fashion and strive to achieve a likeness of my subjects with a sense of spirit, character, and that extra ‘je ne sait quoi’ that makes my subjects ‘live and breathe’.
When painting, I strive to make my work the best it can possibly be, and I continuously seek new avenues to learn more and make my best become even better in the future.
